Our Organisation

Pacific Dementia Māngalo

Pacific Dementia Māngalo (PDM) is a community-led service dedicated to supporting Tongan people and their families living with dementia. The name Māngalo represents a state of forgetfulness but also speaks to the shared responsibility of caring for one another with compassion and purpose. Our service is guided by the Ūloa model of care, a Tongan framework that symbolises collective effort, teamwork, and harmony—much like the traditional practice of fishing together, where everyone has a role to play.

Through the Ūloa approach, our work is grounded in collaboration, respect, and the belief that healing and wellbeing come through unity and shared understanding. This model guides how we support families throughout their dementia journey, ensuring that cultural values, family strengths, and clinical care are woven together in every aspect of our service.

The PDM team provides culturally tailored dementia education, early assessment support, navigation services, and post-diagnostic care to help families understand and manage dementia with confidence. We work closely with individuals, caregivers, and extended families to provide practical guidance and emotional support that honour both cultural and clinical needs.

Our approach is anchored in Tongan values such as faka‘apa‘apa (respect), ngāue fakataha (working together), tauhi vā (maintaining relationships), ‘ofa (love and compassion), and mamahi‘ime‘a (commitment and dedication). These values shape the way we deliver care, build trust, and create safe spaces where families feel supported and valued.

Through community outreach, workshops, and partnerships with Te Whatu Ora and other local organisations, PDM raises awareness about dementia and encourages open conversations within Tongan communities. We aim to reduce stigma, improve access to care, and ensure that every Tongan family affected by dementia feels seen, supported, and empowered.

At its heart, Pacific Dementia Māngalo is more than a service—it is a movement of care, connection, and hope, guided by the Ūloa model and the spirit of collective responsibility, ensuring that our elders and families continue to live with dignity, understanding, and love.
