About Us

Pacific Dementia Māngalo (PDM) is a leading organisation in Auckland that provides comprehensive support and care for Pacific dementia patients and their carers. PDM is a subsidiary of the Aotearoa Tongan Health Workers Association Incorporated. We understand the unique challenges faced by individuals and families dealing with dementia and strive to make a positive impact on their lives.  Our team of experienced professionals is available to answer questions, provide emotional support, and offer practical advice to help individuals navigate the complexities of living with dementia.

We believe that raising awareness about dementia within the Pacific Island community is essential for early detection, understanding, and support. Our organisation offers a range of services tailored to meet the specific needs of Pacific dementia patients and their carers.

Our four key services:

1. Māngalo Community Awareness
   We deliver culturally tailored dementia education through community workshops, church engagements, and radio programmes to raise awareness and reduce stigma within the Tongan community.
2. Māngalo Navigation Service
   Our team supports individuals and families through the dementia journey by providing guidance, information, and connections to health and social services that are culturally and linguistically appropriate for the Tongan community.
3. Māngalo Post-Diagnostic Support Service
   We offer ongoing support to individuals diagnosed with dementia and their families, including care coordination, regular check-ins, and culturally safe intervention plans specific to Tongan values and needs.
4. Māngalo Caregiver Training
   We provide structured training and resources for family and community caregivers, equipping them with practical skills, emotional support, and culturally relevant knowledge to care for Tongan elders living with dementia.
